New Reviews: Week of December 9, 2011
This week was the deadline for my San Francisco Film Critics Circle ballot, and I had a movie marathon. I saw some good stuff, and a lot of bad stuff. It turns out that awards season is much like the rest of the year, but with fewer superhero movies. I also filed my list of the year's ten best movies to the SF Examiner, and I'm pretty happy with it, though I had to make one painful cut. (I'll release it when we get a bit closer to year's end.) One movie stands out this week, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which did place on my ten best list; it's easily among the best spy movies ever made. There's also one great video release this week, a Criterion Blu-Ray of Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes (1938), which could be the most satisfying of all his British movies. (There are obviously other DVD releases this week, like Cowboys & Aliens, but I fell behind in my duties this week.) This Sunday, my critics society casts our final vote, and I'll post the results of that next week.
