Eredivisie's 10 best transfers of the season 2010-11

The 2010-11 season in Dutch football witnessed less transfer movement than normal, with teams opting to be more careful with their cash.

Traditional powerhouses such as PSV, Ajax and Feyenoord were all relatively quiet, with only the transfers of Mounir El Hamdaoui from AZ to Ajax and Jeremain Lens from AZ to PSV really making headlines.

Clubs such as Groningen, Twente and Utrecht have every reason to be pleased with their transfer activity this season, while relegation candidates De Graafschap and Willem II got it right as well wih one great signing each. Eindhoven giants PSV have two representatives in the top 10.

New 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' Trailer

The original Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was a pretty good made-for-TV movie in 1973, and when I say "made-for-TV," that means made for regular, network, broadcast TV. No cable, no TiVo, no nothing. It had commercials, and everyone who wanted to see it had to turn on their TVs at a certain time. Pretty cool. Now Guillermo Del Toro is producing this remake, and even went so far as to work on the screenplay, though he has left the directing duties up to Troy Nixey, a first-timer with only a short film under his belt. The original plot concerned a not-exactly-happily married couple who moved into a new house; the wife becomes obsessed with a secret little room. The original had a hell of an ending, so it will be tough for the new film to top it.

The new movie has an August 28 opening, which is a bad sign, and my hopes aren't too high. Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce star.

Merve Bodur

The Cesc Fabregas Conundrum...

A common criticism of Manchester City is that their approach to football is similar to a game of Football Manager, and at times if the press are to be believed it can certainly seem that way.  Reports today are continuing to circulate that Roberto Mancini is seriously a considering a move for nowty Catalan and Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.

The 'story' is clearly based on absolutely nothing concrete and is essentially just hearsay.  The Mirror reckon that Arsenal are so desperate to keep their captain that they would reject the £30million that supposedly Barcelona value him at, somehow the writer of the piece then jumps from that to City offering £50million, a sum which clearly would be accepted by the hierarchy at the Emirates.

I would never question the players ability, he is a top midfielder and would be a fine long term replacement for Xavi at the Nou Camp, but even if there was a grain of truth to such a story, would I really want City to pay £50million for a player that in all honesty I cannot stand.  It would be foolish to suggest that there isn't a place for him in the City midfield, De Jong, Fabregas and Toure has a fine ring to it, but I just can't feel this move would be far to 'Football Manager' for me.
As I have said previously Fabregas is a player of the highest quality, but there is something about him I cannot stand, his behaviour on the pitch irritates me and whilst he has is not one of the worst offenders for moaning and mouthing off, his regularity of doing it still grates on me.  That coupled with the ridiculous price tag just turn it into a deal that I can't get overly excited about.  I suppose in this market where Andy Carroll is worth £35million, £50mill for Fabregas is probably fair but it doesn't mean we should be paying it.

Even without my whole personal problem with the Spaniard, I think the chances of him agreeing to such a move are about as tiny as that of Dimitar Berbatov still being a United player next season.  For whatever reason Fabregas loves Arsenal, and Arsenal loves him back, the Mirror article contradicts itself by pointing out that he has himself stated that he would only ever play for the Catalans or the North London club, but then in the same story they claim a move to City could be in the offing.

Really all signs point towards some more low rent journalism in a tabloid, but it got me thinking that even though he's a great footballer, I hope we don't spend that sort of money on him....

The Cinema Guild Acquires Bela Tarr's "The Turin Horse"

The following is a press release I received this morning about one of my favorite living filmmakers, Bela Tarr. I'm particularly dismayed by the news that this latest film will be his last. Let's hope that Tarr is just making waves. But I am happy to see that this film will get distribution, unlike Tarr's last film The Man from London; even with Tilda Swinton in it, it only played a few festival dates (although it is now available on iTunes). I look forward to this next one...

*****

New York, NY —The Cinema Guild announced today the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights to Bela Tarr's apocalyptic masterpiece The Turin Horse. The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey of The Cinema Guild with Jean-Christophe Simon of Films Boutique. The film will be released theatrically this winter.

On January 3, 1889 in Turin, Italy, Friedrich Nietzsche steps out of the doorway of number six, Via Carlo Albert. Not far from him, the driver of a hansom cab is having trouble with a stubborn horse. Despite all his urging, the horse refuses to move, whereupon the driver loses his patience and takes his whip to it. Nietzsche comes up to the throng and puts an end to the brutal scene, throwing his arms around the horse’s neck, sobbing. His landlord takes him home, where he lies motionless and silent for two days on a divan until he mutters the obligatory last words, and lives for another ten years, silent and demented, cared for by his mother and sisters. Somewhere in the countryside, the driver of the hansom cab lives with his daughter and the horse. Outside, a windstorm rages.

Widely considered one of the most important filmmakers in world cinema, Bela Tarr's films include  Almanac of the Fall (1985), Damnation (1988), Sátántangó (1994), Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) and The Man from London (2007). He has said The Turin Horse (2011) will be his last film.

"Easily one of the most mesmerizing and singular visions ever put on film, The Turin Horse is unlike anything else in theaters," commented Ryan Krivoshey. "We're honored to be working with Bela Tarr, especially on what will be the release of his last film."

The Cinema Guild is a distributor of independent, foreign and documentary films. Upcoming releases include Steve James and Alex Kotlowitz's The Interrupters, Cristi Puiu's Aurora and Vadim Jendreyko's The Woman with the Five Elephants.

Coaching Changes for Chicago & Vancouver

With coaching changes made in Major League Soccer this past weekend with both Teitur Thordarson (Vancouver) and Carlos de los Cobos (Chicago), Ives Galarcep looks at the moves by both teams.

The 2011 season started off with so much promise for both the Vancouver Whitecaps and Chicago Fire, two teams who came into the season with question marks and coaches who seemed like prime candidates to be replaced if things didn't go well.

After an encouraging March that saw the teams go 2-1-1, Vancouver and Chicago went on horrid runs, combining for a 0-9-11 record, with few signs that things were going to turn around for either club.

So it really shouldn't have come as a surprise that both Teitur Thordarson and Carlos de los Cobos would be the first two coaches fired, and both before the month of June began. Both men were fired on Monday.

Happy Tuesday! I hope you all have a great week!

Twoooosday

If any of you are from around southcentral KY, you know that Chris Allen, our local, cooky, weather guy has a name for everyday of the week. Tuesday= Little Twoooooosday.

I don't know why I just posted that. Strange.

My long weekend was low-key and good. Friday and Saturday was spent with the sister. Her husband works out of town during the week, and sometimes they get called to a job on the weekends. As much as she hates it, and I hate it for her, this is the only time we get to hang out. I love hanging out with my little sis, and had such a good time with her this weekend.

One of my favorite stops on Saturday was a new frozen yogurt shop, called Sweet CeCe's that I had yet to try. I was a little iffy because I'm usually not a fan of the fro-yo. I walked in and was just giddy with all of the options. I paid, dipped the spoon in the bowl, and tasted it. It was delicious! I couldn't help but tell everyone how yummy it was. I will definitely be back!

Vanilla fro-yo with blueberries, strawberries, and kiwi. Yummo!

Sunday was a family cookout for my dad, whose birthday is actually today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ROGER! I always let my insecurities get the best of me when I'm around a big group, and ended up feeling horrible about myself. No one said anything or 'made' me feel bad. I realize (later) that I'm the one that makes myself insecure and embarrassed. Shame on me. All in all, the gathering was good. I just let my emotions get the best of me. And that is embarrassing.

However, it was good to see this little nugget. He is the sweetest thing ever and just makes me smile.

Just look at those eyes. Preciousness.
Yesterday, I slept in until like noon. It was ahhmazing. I was in my pj's until a little after two, and decided to hang out with one of my best friends. While picking up a frame about 40 minutes away (long story), we decided to get the gang together for a little cookout session. Fun times, of course. One of my favorite things about summer is grilling out with friends, and the fruits and veggies. I made bought some things for a strawberry shortcake. They were delish!

Whitney with her "double decker shortcake."

I got to work this morning, and was happily surprised to find out it was Tuesday and not Monday! Whoo-hoo to a short work week!

How was your weekend?

Don't forget to link up with my Favorite Things Thursday. If you would like an email to remind you of the topic, please let me know. I would love for more people to join in on the fun.
