The 54th San Francisco International Film Festival is rapidly approaching, and the news broke today that the coveted opening night slot will be filled by Mike Mills' Beginners. (The poster was also released today.) The film stars Ewan McGregor as a man who falls in love -- with Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) -- not long after the death of his father (Christopher Plummer), who came out of the closet at age 75.
Mills is a former music video director (Air, Moby, Pulp, etc.) with one feature under his belt, Thumbsucker (2005). I wasn't the biggest fan of that film, but I'm hoping this one fares better.
