Combustible Celluloid: The Weekly Newsletter of the Online Film Magazine - May 11, 2012

My prediction last week that The Avengers will be the movie of the summer seems to be coming true. Not much to get excited about this week except that Tim Burton nearly had a success with Dark Shadows. After thinking it over, I decided that he's a bad fit with the writer Seth Grahame-Smith (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies). The movie had too many of the same kind of jokes and not enough soapiness. But otherwise, it looked terrific, and it got pretty close. Not even the DVDs and Blu-Rays this week are exciting, but at least we know that good stuff is coming later in the summer (A Blu-Ray of Johnny Guitar was just announced!) My interview with Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote or co-wrote Raiders of the Lost Arkand The Empire Strikes Back, ran in the Examiner this week, and that was a talk I thoroughly enjoyed. Also, I found the link for my superhero post that ran on Fandango.com (posted below) if you're curious. Next week I'm going to Cannes for just a couple of days, and I probably won't get the newsletter out on time, but I will try to send it out later on, when I return. I'm very excited!
